Pre-Dallas Checklist

I’m sure most of you have been attending the Dallas Market (or at least the January Dallas Market) long enough to have your pre-show routine down pat. Disciples of display guru Denis Caldora snap reference photos of existing merchandise to identify conspicuous gaps and (almost more importantly) what’s definitely not needed in a product mix. Reps contact key customers to set or confirm appointments, including dinner reservations. Ladies attending the ARTS Awards on Saturday night make their “what to wear” wardrobe verdicts, as well as which day shoes will stand up to the walking and standing demands of the show.

Well, I hate to add to your Big D “to-do” list, but if you’re a retailer, I’m hoping you’ll also make time to register for the first-ever Showroom IdeaShare. Conveniently taking place right at the show on Thursday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m. and produced by Residential Lighting in partnership with the Accessories Resource Team (ART), this groundbreaking roundtable will give lighting showrooms the opportunity to ask anonymous questions of their peers and provide their own answers to others’ inquiries in the spirit of greater good for our industry.

There is no charge for this event, and you don’t have to be an ART member to participate. But because there is limited space available in the ART meeting room (WTC 166) where it will be held, you do need to register in advance. Just e-mail me or ART Executive Director Sharon Davis to reserve your spot. And give your business a leg up in 2011 despite your aching end-of-day feet in Dallas.
