HGTV to Receive ARTS Academy of Achievement Award
March 8, 2012 - 4:15pm

The Accessories Resource Team (ART) and Dallas Market Center will honor HGTV with the Academy Achievement Award at the 22nd annual ARTS Awards this January, it was announced earlier this month. This is the first time the award has gone to an institution and not an individual.

Sharon Davis, ART Executive Director, says this award for HGTV has been a long time coming.

“We’ve been talking about it for quite some time, so we decided to do it this year because it felt like a good time to honor partners in the industry,” Davis says.

And when the people at ART considered institutions that have made an impact in the industry, HGTV really stood out.

“If you look at institutions that have really changed how people think about redoing and redecorating their home, the one that jumps out is HGTV,” Davis says. “It’s made a huge impact. It started out really small, but now everyone knows HGTV.”

Since launching in 1994, HGTV, or Home & Garden Television, has become a major force in home and lifestyle television programming. One of cable’s top-rated networks, HGTV is currently distributed to more than 98 million U.S. households, and its website attracts 5 million visitors each month.

Leaders at HGTV were thrilled to hear about the award, and are currently in talks with ART on how to best put together the honoree video.

“We are honored to accept the ARTS Academy of Achievement Award and appreciate this recognition from our industry peers,” says Freddy James, Senior Vice President of Program Development and Production at HGTV. “HGTV is committed to providing lifestyle entertainment that showcases practical advice and fresh ideas from experts in design, architecture, building/remodeling and real estate and we will continue our work to deliver programming that viewers find current, relevant, informative and entertaining.”

Although this is the first time ART has honored an institution with this award, Davis says it won’t be the last.

“I think there are definitely other institutions out there that deserve this award, and I don’t see this as a one-time deal,” she says.

The black-tie ARTS Awards gala will take place on Jan. 22, 2011, during the winter Dallas Market.
