Edge Lighting, Chicago, IL, is a winner of the Department of Energy's (DOE) fifth annual Next Generation Luminaires Design Competition for outdoor lighting.

The competition was launched in 2008 to promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED commercial luminaires and is sponsored by the Energy Department, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the International Association of Lighting Designers. Solid-state lighting, which includes both LED and OLED technologies, has the potential to save Americans $30 billion a year in energy costs by 2030.

A panel of eight judges from the architectural lighting design community evaluated 120 outdoor lighting entries from 42 manufacturers based on lighting quality, appearance, construction, serviceability, efficacy, and value. The "best-in-class" winners represent four different manufacturers and cover four distinct outdoor lighting areas. Edge Lighting was awarded "best-in-class" for its TV and Dial LED decorative wall sconces.

The geometric TV LED wall sconce provides intense light using warm white LEDs with a satin aluminum or white base and a crystal clear diffuser. The Dial luminaire spreads warm-white light across the wall through the ring-shaped lens and can be used as a wall uplight or wall downlight. Both fixtures are ADA-compliant and feature a weather-resistant, powder-coated finish and are IP65-rated for outdoor and indoor applications.

The judges reacted very positively to the unique and creative design of these two decorative luminaires. Comments like "beautiful fixture," "great use of LED technology," and "cool, innovative fixture" indicate why the product was seen as "Best in Class" almost at the outset, although judges did express some concerns about serviceability.

More information on all of the winning entries is available at the Next Generation Luminaires website.
