Del Mar Lighting to Host Reopening
March 8, 2012 - 3:24pm

Dave Carr, founder of Del Mar Lighting, a high-end lighting design firm, will unveil an all-new, 3,000-square-foot showroom — an expansion of its former showroom in the same Orange County location — featuring hundreds of custom and international lighting designs, grouped into themed spaces. According to the company, the designs are aimed at the most astute clientele.

The space, which had been closed due to renovations for nearly 10 months, has been gutted and completely revamped with new wood floors and cork walls, and stocked with all new high-end lines from Spain and Italy.

Tucked away in an industrial park corridor, the showroom adds a unique vibe to the area. With a very niche clientele — the residential part of the business targets mostly homes valued at $4 million or more — of the showroom seeks to position itself as "the best value for the highest-end product," says Carr. The renovations demanded a lot of effort, time and money, but Carr says he hopes the investment will pay off when the economy finally bounces back.

"We’ve been fortunate enough we’ve positioned ourselves where were not only holding our own but actually expanding in a big way," he says. By staying in the industrial park area and not a high-end retail area, he has managed to keep overhead costs low. For the past three to four years, the business has been saving to finance the renovation.

The reopening will be celebrated with an "after work into the evening" soiree from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the showroom, located at 2852 Walnut Ave. Bldg. F in Tustin, CA, on Thursday, Oct. 29. The light-hearted party is themed "Beyond the Light" with a "Hollywood awards show" flavor as attendees walk an orange carpet and are greeted with paparazzi before entering the showroom and viewing the lighting designs. The evening will feature passed appetizers, club music, a wine and martini bar, and demonstrations in glass blowing, iron forging and lamp-making. Large searchlights beamed into the night sky will mark the exact location of the showroom and party.

About 200 designers, architects, hotel and home developers and builders, plus high-end homeowners and community activists have been invited to the party. The event is free and open to the lighting community. Exciting giveaways such as Las Vegas trips, golf games at a prestigious golf resort, and expensive lighting fixtures will be part of a raffle benefiting the Hopeful Child Charity.

The dress code is described as "typical Southern California" attire.

Carr is a third-generation lighting professional. His grandfather was a decorative lighting designer who provided fixtures for celebrity icons such as Walt Disney and John Wayne. His father founded Carr Lighting in Los Angeles, and he followed in his family’s footsteps by founding Del Mar Lighting in 2001.

The name, which is Spanish for “of or by the sea,” speaks to Carr’s desire to provide lighting fixtures that could heartily withstand the wear and tear of the moisture and salt air ever-present in coastal locations. All of Del Mar’s exterior fixtures are solid brass.

Several Del Mar designs were selected for the Wynn Las Vegas, and Carr is currently working with owner Steve Wynn on typhoon-proof fixtures for the Wynn Macau China.
