25th Annual ARTS Awards Finalists Announced

The winners will be honored at a gala event on Jan. 18, 2014, during the winter Dallas Market.

The Dallas Market Center (DMC) and ART - The Creative Home Furnishings Network recently announced the 25th annual ARTS Awards finalists. The awards will be presented at a gala event on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at the Hilton Anatole Hotel during the winter Dallas Market.

The finalist presentation submissions are 100 percent digital for the second year in a row. The five judges (plus the sixth representing the Sustainable Furnishings Council used to choose a Green Award winner) independently review and score each submission on criteria established by the ARTS Awards Committee.

This year, a new regional retail category — Outdoor Lifestyle Store — will support pool and patio, outdoor living and garden center retailers.

“This growing niche has excellent stores throughout the country that we are excited to honor,” says Cindy Morris, DMC COO.

Beyond this new addition, the 25th ARTS Awards will be different in another big way, according to DMC’s Director of Marketing Lindsey Villarreal. Rising Star will no longer be a judged category. Instead, the ARTS Awards Committee will determine one honoree based off of submitted nominations (versus three to five finalists required to submit materials for judging).

“As you know, opening a new (and successful) business in our industry these days is challenging,” Villarreal says. “This change will allow for proper recognition of the winning manufacturer or retailer.”

Also unprecedented this year: the original founders of ART will jointly receive the Academy of Achievement Award, which is handed out each year to recognize companies and/or individuals who have made significant contributions to the industry. ART founders include Gil Bailie, Eric Bauer, Ralph Chancey, Henry Goldman and The Natural Light’s Harvey Hollingsworth.

The ARTS lighting categories have not changed: manufacturer categories for lighting fixtures and portable lamps, plus three lighting showroom categories based on region remain. Lighting made a strong showing in other categories as well, with two lighting showroom finalists in the International Retailer category (2013’s winner Multi Luminaire and Norburn Lighting); sales representative finalists Richard Alan and Chas Lassoff; and product designer finalist Paul C. Grüer, who designs for Flambeau.
