Royal Phillips Offers Award-Winning Cure for the Blues

Royal Philips Electronics was named a 2009 Innovations Design and Engineering Awards honoree for its goLITE BLU light therapy device. The Consumer Electronics Assn., producer of the annual International Consumer Electronics Show, sponsors the decades-old design competition.

The Philips goLITE BLU is a portable therapy light that helps the user “beat the winter blues without the use of drugs or artificial stimulants.” The 5.5-inch-square device uses Philips’ proprietary Bluewave technology, which targets the wavelength of light to which the body clock responds. According to the manufacturer, improved mood and energy can be felt within a few days, with as little as 15 to 20 minutes of use per day.

GoLITE BLU was judged by a panel of independent industrial designers, engineers and members of the trade press to honor outstanding design and engineering in cutting-edge consumer electronics products. Products were evaluated for their engineering qualities, based on technical specs and materials used; aesthetic and design qualities; the products intended use/function and user value; and unique/novel features that consumers would find attractive.
