The 13th annual Goombay Bash will take place Aug. 3, 2013, at the Grand Ballroom on Chicago's Navy Pier from 5 p.m. to midnight. The fundraiser, started by Hortons Home Lighting , LaGrange, IL, and its organization The H Foundation raised more than $500,000 last year for the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.
Cancer is personal to Hortons. After the company lost two employees to the disease, including 31-year-old Pam Herts, it created The H Foundation to raise money and find a cure. The nonprofit has raised more than $4.5 million for basic cancer research since its inception, and the Caribbean-themed Goombay Bash is its biggest annual event.
The lighting industry always comes in force to this party. In 2012, manufacturers, reps and showrooms attended the event, bought auction items and donated cash. Feiss , Quoizel , Elk-Dimond , Adesso , Mondoluz , Uttermost , Stein World , Lite Source and Pacific Coast Lighting donated products to be auctioned off, and 16 lighting companies bought sponsorships totaling almost $40,000.
"The lighting industry's support of The H Foundation and Goombay Bash has been both amazing and humbling," says Hortons Home Lighting owner John Rot. "Every year, the industry comes together for something completely outside our individual businesses to raise money for cancer research. Their collective commitment to helping us find a cure for this terrible disease is truly inspiring. I am honored to be part of the generous and supportive lighting coummunity."
According to Kate Harken, Executive Director for The H Foundation, the 2013 Goombay Bash will include some exciting to features to "freshen it up for our longtime supporters and appeal to new guests."
"Keep your eyes open for celebrity guests like Jimmy Butler — #21 on the Chicago Bulls — and former NFL and NBA players, as well as possibly actors George Wendt and Bonnie Hunt," says Harken. "We've also added a Caribbean Casino for those who want to test their luck, and have enhanced our VIP experience. It's everything you've loved about the Goombay Bash, only bigger and better!"
