The Ministry of the Environment in British Columbia announced that all lighting showrooms or lighting manufacturers doing business in the Canadian province must pay a recycling fee for each lighting product they sell. In order to do this, companies must register with Product Care, a nonprofit group that the Ministry of the Environment has selected to handle the program.
American Lighting Assn. (ALA) President and CEO Dick Upton says he was informed by authorities that showrooms and manufacturers were sent notice last April, but most members report they knew nothing about the requirements until early June, when ALA also learned about it.
“Originally, the new requirement was supposed to take effect on July 1, but we’ve been successful in gaining some relief,” Upton says. “I give a lot of credit to both the Ministry of the Environment and Product Care for taking our calls and being open to input.”
As it stands now, companies have to register with Product Care by July 1 to be in compliance; however, fee obligations will begin Oct. 1, with first reports due Nov. 1. Upton says this extension will give retailers and manufacturers time to make the necessary adjustments in their computer systems.
