Hoppen: My approach when designing a space is always the same. I get to know my clients well, understand how they live within the space and design the home couture to them.
Lighting can make or break a room, and it is integral to my designs. I always use low level and task lighting. There is nothing more unflattering to a woman than overhead lighting! When planning a space, I see where the light naturally falls and then work out any dark spots needed to compensate for the space to feel balanced. If you have the budget, employ a lighting designer, as they really understand the product and the variations available on the market. My lighting designer, Rob Clift, is an angel.
I guess I design products that I would like to be able to use in my designs — items that I feel I have been searching for. Once I am in the creative zone and feel truly inspired, I can rough sketch an entire collection in a day. Designing my fashion collection was, I suppose, the most difficult, as it was all very new to me, but once you have the hang of how the patterns work, etc., this becomes much easier. All of my products are very much in keeping with my core brand values of timeless elegance and balance of East and West.
I am currently in the design stages of two lighting collections, one high-end and one mass market. Fingers crossed they should be available early next year. I can’t really say too much at the moment.
