Lighting guru Randall Whitehead proffers his advice on imbuing fluorescents with flair—and convincing consumers to make the switch.
Randall, what keeps so many people from switching to fluorescent?
I feel that even when consumers know that there are fluorescents available in a spectrum of warm colors that don’t hum or buzz, they may still have a prejudice against the shape of a compact fluorescent bulb. If the bulb can be seen within the fixture, all their negative associations come flooding back, like memories of a bad first date. I want manufacturers to create fixtures that hide the light source. You’d be amazed at how many people will think it is an incandescent source if they can’t see the shape of the bulb. You might say that it’s a case of acceptance by disassociation.
