A recent design contest at Lightology  in Chicago gave designers a chance to show off their creativity with LEDs and brought a number of new faces into the retailer’s showroom.
Lindsay Wilps, Lightology’s Web Content Coordinator and the person in charge of planning the event, says the idea for the contest came about because the owners wanted to try something different.
“We wanted to do something creative and interesting where we could get a lot of different types of entries, and we were inspired by other contests,” Wilps says. “We ended up deciding on the LED Soft Strip because it’s very popular and easy to use, and it has lots of different applications.”
The store received more than 100 entries and 15 of these were selected as finalists and provided with enough LED Soft Strip to turn their sketch into a prototype. The finalists were then judged by a panel unaffiliated with the store, and a People’s Choice award was also given to the entry that got the most votes online and at the store.
The winning entry, “Taut” (pictured) by Derek Porter Studio , was chosen by the judges because it combined art and functionality.
“The judges said the design from Derek Porter Studio was more architectural and practical than the others, and they could see it in different buildings,” Wilps says. “It was visually interesting, but it also provided light and served a purpose.”
The Oct. 7 awards reception attracted more than 200 attendees to the Lightology showroom, where they were given the chance to vote on their favorite design.
Overall, Wilps says the event was a success, and will probably become an annual event for the retailer.
“We got a lot of positive response from it, and people really enjoyed looking at the pieces,” she says. “It was great for us and great for the design community both in Chicago and nationally. And everybody who submitted said it inspired them to want to design something with LEDs.”
