Shelly Wang, Vice President and General Manager of WAC Lighting, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the New York Asian Women’s Center, an organization that offers counseling and shelter to Asians who have been victims of violence and trafficking.
Founded in 1982, the New York Asian Women’s Center is largest and second oldest Asian American domestic violence agency in the country. The organization estimates that there are about 17,500 slaves living in the United States today, and about 80 percent of them are women and children from Asian who are sold into the sex trade.
Recently, the center started a human trafficking recovery program called “Project Free,” and in November, the organization opened a new emergency shelter for families that will be able to house up to 40 women and children.
