I’m eager to get to the Dallas Market. And it’s not just because my home in Chicago is currently engulfed in the “polar vortex” and I’m looking to improve my latitude. No, the warmth I seek is more along the lines of reconnecting with industry friends and stoking my passion for innovative design.

The good news is that this winter 2014 edition of market will have an earlier official start: Wednesday, Jan. 15. I know a lot of lighting showrooms were already open on Wednesday in the past to catch Total Home & Gift traffic (which had already been underway Wednesday), but now both shows will be in sync.

Lighting One events had also historically created increased Wednesday activity on Trade Mart 3 and 4. The group will kick off its powerful presence this time with a welcome reception and awards gala for members and suppliers on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 7-9 p.m. at the nearby Renaissance Dallas Hotel.

The summer Dallas Intl. Lighting Market will also have a Wednesday start (and will close on Saturday). This moves the annual Showroom of the Year Awards presentation — now in its fifth year — to Wednesday, June 18. There’s still time to enter your showroom (or nominate one) for this prestigious honor, but hurry — the Feb. 3 deadline will be here before you know it. And, if the groundhog cooperates the day before, so will the end of this already miserable winter.
